Apokalipto

In this age of convergence, it is inevitable that the various communication channels will ‘collide’ and eventually converge. I think we’ve all seen a number of examples how communication channels collide, mobile phones with camera, a digital still camera that could also shoot video, a mobile phone with GPS, laptop that can also receive TV signals among others. Well, here’s an example where print meets motion picture.

I like the cinematography of this teaser and the treatment that it gives you–a feel that it’s a marvel comics movie. Well, we all know that Disney recently acquired Marvel Comics, so I wondered whether this is an extension of that move in the Philippines?? It might sound ridiculous but that’s what came to my mind. :)

Apokalipto is derived from the word apocalypse which means ‘universal or widespread destruction’ ironically the teaser suggests otherwise. The child in the teaser asks ‘Apokalipto’ whether he is there to help them. Apokalipto answers “tutulungan ko kayo’...

Mobile registrations are scheduled this month in Darwin, Melbourne and Perth.
Filipinos including those who hold dual citizenship are entitled to register for the OAV. For Filipinos who previously registered as OAV elsewhere, kindly contact the consulate office in your area if you can skip this registration schedule. There are some Pinoys who have expressed doubt in the exercise, however, this is the best that we can do rather than watch as the votes are cast. If there will be any irregularities, I believe there will be some good representations from independent organisations who will be able to deter or at least note of such thing.

Following are the schedule here in Australia:

Darwin, NT

Date and Time: Saturday & Sunday, 15-16 August 2009, 9:00am to 5:00pm

Venue: Philippine Community Centre, Corner of Amy John...

Almost pffft...

I was in limbo these past few weeks. The pressure of postgraduate training was slowly eating me up. I thought I was doing fine. I was still doing the regular things being a father, husband and student. I had to admit that there are backlogs in all of the roles that I am trying to juggle. One obvious sign of the problem was that I stopped blogging as much as I can. Although I diverted my attention to micro blogging, I still feel there’s a different ‘high’ in blogging. It is, still, my stress relieving activity (I had to admit that it contributes to my stress but the benefit outweighs the bad side of it—really)

This week it became evident physically. I was losing weight, I feel that I don’t have enough sleep despite having lots of it and my schedule is in disarray despite having a well planned workday.

But I reckon today was the day that I got a bit of a reprieve when the wifey came to the rescue. I felt so weak physically and spiritually this week and Lorie’s one day off made a b...

Gifts of Love

This week, I sent out my family's Christmas greetings to relatives and friends through the family email (I hope it wasn't caught in your spam filters, please check!) . It was a 'generic' one but the message was definitely from the heart. It did get some responses but I never expected to get negative ones.

I will not go to the details of the negative responses. I just could not understand why a simple 'heartfelt' greeting got a negative feedback. However, when I read the PDIs editorial today, it hit me a bit. Especially the following paragraph:

A letter full of love and expressions of appreciation and thanks would do more wonders than a “commercial” mass-produced holiday greeting card. During the daily rat race we often do not have time to exchange pleasantries, to ask how someone is doing, to tell someone that you care for him or her. Christmas should be a time to write that letter that will tell someone that he or she is loved, that one cares sincerely about his or her welfare and state...

Story tellers

One thing that I've noticed among good preachers, journalists, directors and teachers--they are all good story teller. Whether it be writing or plain public speaking, they get the job done.

My mentor once told me that to be able to write well, you have to be a wide reader. But I also heard that to be able to write well, you must know what you write (this one's from a movie, I forgot the title though). In thesis writing, it is a different story. It seems to be an investigative story that you have to complete even before the whole story ended. Outside the academe, writing is both a creative and scientific activity. Creative as you must have congruence in your presented ideas, scientific as it must follow a number of rules, that is ethics and grammar (the latter, I sometimes fail mainly because of laziness to re-read that I've free written by my very fast fingers!).

Having said that I would like to present the growing list of people that I admire not only as story tellers or prolific writ...

Blog Action Day against poverty

Change is said to be the only thing permanent in the world, however, poverty might as well qualify as another thing becoming permanent in the world, unless we do something about it. There have been many debates as to how to eradicate poverty and it has become a worldwide concern that the UN top it on the list of its priority for its millennium development goals.

In the Philippines the root causes of poverty according to an ADB publication are macroeconomic issues; unemployment issues; population growth; problems in the agriculture sector; governance concerns; armed conflict; and, disability. These are aggravated by corruption and other social problems.

When we think of poverty, what comes to mind sometimes are names of developing and least developed countries such as African and Southeast Asian countries. However, poverty is so pervasive that it is a reality even here in a first world country like Australia.

Despite ranking top in the recent world prosperity index, Australia still has...

Woooh! It was pretty chilly this morning. Well, no wonder as it was registered as Perth's coldest September morning on record--1C.

How 'bout a cuppa?

Following photo was taken when we first arrived in Perth.
Outback Jack

Australia is famous for its tender, juicy beef. It has the best beef breeds in the world including the famous Angus beef. When Mommy visited us, we took her to Outback Jack, it was our first time to attend an Australian Restaurant.

It was worth the money.

I had an Aussie grilled skewer of prime grain fed aged rump. The diamond cut was a good main course. Mommy got Neptune's steak while Lorie got Boss Cocky's cut. More info on the restaurant here

Bad memories in Friendly Australia

NB:Following was an article that I wrote and planned to submit anonymously to a publication at my University in New South Wales. But I think I wasn't able to submit it. I was consolidating my files when I saw this, I wasn't a blogger back then, so for posterity's sake, I'm posting it here, they might find some lessons learned. Of course, comments are welcome from the good, the bad and the ugly.

Friendly Australia

I was eager to see the Land Down Under. Having Australian bosses boosted the image of a very friendly Australia. However, I got wind from some friends that some parts of Australia might not be so friendly to non-Anglo-Saxons like me, especially places far from the center, i.e., the rural areas.

I raised the issue with one of my Australian bosses and he downplayed the allegations of racial discrimination in his beloved country. Taking his word, I gathered all courage and confidence to accept an invitation from the Commonwealth Government to study here.

It was my first long tr...

Father's Day

Yes it is Down Under!

Last Sunday, Australia celebrated Father's Day. Well, I think it is just like Christmas, the date is not the exact date but at least there's an agreed date that we celebrate it. In Thailand, we celebrate it during the king's birthday--December 5. In the Philippines, we celebrate it on the first Sunday of June.

The kids gave a special number in church and sang 'Hero' by Mariah Carey. It was an awesome sight to see my children singing on stage (though Nel had to deal with her frowning face ) but they did great. As three fathers were asked to speak about fatherhood, one of message of the fathers struck me hard.

In a gist, he said that being a father, he still sees himself as a child, dependent to the greatest father of all--Father God. I guess it was the same with me, I am always a father in training and I will always have my inspiration in sight--my children. The speaker shared the following verse from Habakkuk, highlighting the unconditional dependency of Christi...

Close to burning out

Tonight, I had to go out to buy band aid for Nira, my daughter, who accidentally cut her finger with a bread knife. The cut was just small and there was nothing to be worried about, though I had to admit I almost snapped when I saw her bleeding finger--reminded me when she almost severed two of her fingertips when it got caught by a door slammed by strong winds. But this is another story for another blog.

Anyway, there was a free stress assessment machine in the pharmacy. Since it's free I gave it a go. I know I'm a bit stressed these last few days that I wasn't able to write substantially reports or parts of my chapters. The readings came out.

Physical stress: Normal
Mental stress: Low (am I studying or what???)
Stress dissolution ability: Very low
Blood circulation: Excellent

Well, you might think that generally my stress reading was all good.
